What's new at the SKC Ed & Pat Gilbert's K-9 Structure & Movement Seminar This comprehensive seminar focusing on canine structure and movement will be held on Sept. 27 and 28, at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner, Kan., the same weekend as the SKC Fun Match. All people involved in canine activities will benefit from the seminar, from those who show, breed, hunt, and work with dogs to those who are involved in obedience, agility and other sports activities.
The Gilberts are both AKC judges. Pat is an approved AKC Junior Showmanship judge, Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) Hound Group judge as well as numerous other breeds, such as the Finnish Spitz, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Italian Greyhounds, all Poodles and the Norwegian Lundehund. She is AKC approved for Afghan Hound, Basset Hound, Borzois, Dachshund, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Saluki. She is active in AKC, CKC and International events as a breeder and exhibitor of champion Borzois, Salukis and Boxers, as well as a professional all-breed handler. She has taught conformation handling classes to 4-H students and adults, and in 1977, she was a judge at the 4-H Finals at the New York State Fair. Pat has judged shows in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Republic of Korea. She is a professional groomer with more than 25 years experience. Ed is an author and AKC judge of the Sporting and Hound groups as well as miscellaneous, Best of Show and seven working breeds. He has been presenting canine seminars for more than 40 years. He has judged specialties and all-breed shows as well as held educational programs in the United States, Australia, Canada, Finland, Israel, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand and has also judged in Hong Kong and Taiwan. He is currently an advisor for the Center of Companion Animal Health, School of Veterinary Medicine (UC-Davis), and both he and Pat are on the President's Council of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. In the past, Ed was an advisory board member of the 1973 California State Assembly Animal Care and Control Task Force, was 1994-95 president of the California Federation of Dog Clubs, was a delegate to the AKC, board member of the Afghan Hound Club of America and has held numerous offices in various kennel clubs. Past programs Adelene Pardo's Loose-lead Handling Seminar The SKC was pleased to present Adelene Pardo's Loose-lead Handling seminar on Sept. 29, at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner, Kan. Dubbed a "Texas Legend," Mrs. Pardo is a retired professional all-breed handler and a Sporting Group and Best in Show judge. She has bred many top-10 Weimaraners under the Weimer Castle kennel name. Under Mrs. Pardo's guidance, participants learned how to work with their dog using her handling techniques. Students were allowed to bring more than one dog or could participate as an observer. All students were advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Lunch was included in the class fee. For more information about this past event, contact Jessica Allen.
Junior Showmanship Judging Seminar AKC Executive Field Representative Gina Wieser held a Judging Junior presentation on Sept. 29 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner, Kan. There was no charge to attend. The seminar was held on the same weekend and at the same location as the Pardo loose-lead seminar and the SKC's Fun Match.Attending the seminar helped participants meet the requirements to judge Junior Showmanship.
