Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks never saw an obedience trial. It's a lot more than sit, stay, come and heel. Obedience competition judges the dog and handler as a team and it tests the team on the ability to perform challenges as varying skill levels based on competition level. The Novice class (A and B) is where everyone begins, demonstrating basic commands such as heeling with and without a leash, coming on call or standing for an examination. After earning qualifying scores from three different judges, the American Kennel Club Companion Dog (CD) title is earned. In Open Class (A and B), the tasks are more challenging. In addition to more off-leash work performed, new skills such as retrieving and jumping are demonstrated. Qualifying scores earn an AKC Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title. Utility Class takes dogs and handlers to yet another skill level with scent discrimination, silent signal commands and jumping. Qualifying scores earn a dog an AKC Utility Dog (UD) title and allow the team to move forward to an even more demanding level, the Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) title. For UDX, the dog and handler must earn 10 passing scores in both the Open B and Utility B at the same show. The highest Obedience title that can be earned is the Obedience Trial Championship (OTCH). This title requires the dog and handler to earn 100 points by placing in one of the top four positions (first, second, third or fourth) in the Open B or Utility B class and to earn a first place in Utility B and/or Open B three times.
